Chapter 28

Hours passed in Bella’s Conclave, and the ray of light shining through the bony iris in the center of the ceiling gradually dimmed, the iris opening wide to compensate for it. The lens beneath the eye contracted, going from relatively flat to more spherical, focusing the light into a tighter beam. This kept the Conclave adequately illuminated.

It was, Bella supposed, an indication of the time. Day had transitioned to night…and Kanja eventually finished her sculpture. Simon, Kanja, and Bella stood around it, and Bella marveled at the sheer level of detail the Sculptor had managed to put into it.

Rodo was a spherical creature of mouths standing nearly seven feet tall. In addition to the two eye-mouths Bella had seen Kanja carve earlier, Rodo had many other bright-pink eyes around his body, so that no matter how his body rolled, he could still see everything around him. And rolling was exactly how the sculpture got around…by using his many mouths to grip the floor and propel himself along, with a little boost from each of his countless tongues. But perhaps the most interesting part was that Rodo’s interior didn’t move at all. It stayed still regardless of how he rotated, so that anyone kept inside wouldn’t bounce around madly inside of him whenever he moved.

“Okay, so how is Rodo going to help Gideon?” Bella asked.

“Show her, Rodo,” Kanja requested. Rodo grinned with his biggest mouth, then opened it impossibly wide, showing a huge throat. One that could easily fit a human or two inside of it. “Gideon can crawl in Rodo,” Kanja explained. “Rodo’s skin is very tough and thick, and as strong as granite. It’ll be like Gideon’s wearing foot-thick granite armor everywhere he goes.”

“Nice,” Bella murmured. She turned to Simon. “And how are we going to get into Centrum through that dome?”

“Floppy,” he answered. She frowned.

“What?”

“Floppy Disc,” he clarified. “Your blood-painting.”

They’d shown each other their paintings earlier, to get a handle on what their team’s combat capabilities would be. Although Simon had declined to explain the nature of his new Familiar, his white suit Redeemer. One of those paintings was the one Bella had painted using her own blood while escaping from Petrusa’s men with her mother. A dark disc that, when applied to any surface, made a hole through it.

“Oh,” she replied, taken aback. “Wouldn’t it just pass through the mirror?”

“Try it,” Simon prompted. He retrieved a shard of a Gemini from his pocket, bringing it to his lips. “Come, one of you,” he ordered.

Bella looked upward to the part of Manus forming the iris of the Conclave. She raised a hand, making an “OK” sign. The iris broke apart, flying upward through the pupil and vanishing from sight. A moment later, a flash of light shot downward onto the dark circle in the center of the Conclave, and one of the Gemini stepped out of the light and up to Bella. The many hands of Manus came back through the pupil then, re-forming the iris.

The Gemini transformed, making a mirror of its belly and chest.
